Nana Buluku is the  feminine Supreme being in many West African spiritual practices. She is the mother supreme creator who gave birth to the moon spirit Mawu, the sun spirit Lisa, and all of the universe. Her children co-exist as Mawu-Lisa, a dual deity charged with creating the rest of the world.

Eclipses are believed to be convergent moment when the Sun and the Moon come together to create life. As Mawu-Lisa traverses the universe, the travel via the great Cosmic Snake, Ayida-Weddo.
